See Suffolk through the eyes of years gone by. Suffolk’s rich heritage dates back to the early 17th century, when Captain John Smith first encountered the Nansemond Indians on the Nansemond River. Even now, you can trace Suffolk’s legacy through our historic homes and neighborhoods, churches and Virginia Civil War Trails. Guided by a Suffolk historian, you meet the people and places that made Suffolk the city it is today. Highlights of this windshield tour include Cedar Hill Cemetery, Riddick’s Folly House Museum, Constant’s Wharf, College Court and Suffolk’s Historic Lakeside neighborhood.

Cost: $8 adults; $6 seniors (60+), military, and children 9-12.

Cedar Hill Cemetery Stroll

An official Virginia Civil War Trail site, Cedar Hill Cemetery has long been an attraction for history buffs and even walking groups. The Suffolk Division of Tourism offers a guided stroll through the pleasant 32-acre cemetery, rich in history and natural beauty. The 90-minute daytime tour will offer unique insights into Suffolk’s heritage as tour goers traverse the cedar-lined terrain dotted with timeworn headstones. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour. Call the Suffolk Visitor Center at 757.514.4130 to reserve your spot. Special rates are available for groups of 12 or more.

Taylor Burrows comes to the Center with extensive knowledge of a variety of different style of dances. For the first hour, you will get a crash course on ballroom dancing, and then the next hour, it’s time for you to put your knowledge to practice! Bring a partner; it will be a lot of fun! First 2 drinks are included. Additional drinks available for purchase.

Great Dismal Swamp Safari

Time: 9:30 am - 1:30 pm

The Great Dismal Swamp is anything but dismal. The narrated Swamp Safari, one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions, fills up quickly. This four-hour tour is led by a biologist specializing is the unique habitat of the Great Dismal. Learn about the history, lore, vegetation and wildlife with this adventure that includes a brief walk to Lake Drummond. Sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. A small snack and beverage is provided. This tour is not recommended for very small children. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour. Carols and Lullabies of the Southwest

Virginia Choral Society, in partnership with Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, presents: “Carols and Lullabies of the Southwest.” The Virginia Choral Society is a community-based choral group of 80-100 voices singing a wide variety of repertoire. At any given concert, you might hear Broadway choruses, a large choral-orchestral work, jazz standards, folk songs, traditional favorites, or a commissioned work from a local composer. VCS is one of the oldest continuously performing choral organizations in Virginia, having been organized in 1931.

Bring Your Pets to Meet Santa at the Suffolk Visitor Center

Bring your pet to meet jolly ol’ St. Nick! We welcome all friendly, well-behaved critters. Dogs must be leashed. Pet owners are encouraged to bring a donation for the homeless pets at the Suffolk Animal Shelter. The following items are encouraged kitty litter, cat food/kitten chow, dog food/puppy chow, leashes and collars, grooming supplies, toys, crates, towels, blankets, bleach, hand sanitizer & wipes, laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, trash bags and carriers.
