Great Dismal Swamp Safari

Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

The Great Dismal Swamp is anything but dismal. The narrated Swamp Safari, one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions, fills up quickly. This four-hour tour is led by a biologist specializing is the unique habitat of the Great Dismal. Learn about the history, lore, vegetation and wildlife with this adventure that includes a brief walk to Lake Drummond. Sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. A small snack and beverage is provided. This tour is not recommended for very small children. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour. The 90-minute daytime tour will offer unique insights into Suffolk’s heritage as tour goers traverse the cedar-lined terrain dotted with timeworn headstones. Suffolk Grand Illumination

The 2019 Holiday Season officially begins in Suffolk on Friday, November 22, with the Suffolk Grand Illumination Ceremony at Market Park in Downtown Suffolk. The event rings in the holidays with the park opening at 6 p.m. Watch the 32′ tree light up when the switch is flipped at 6:15 p.m., illuminating Suffolk for the holiday season. Be there when Santa arrives in style (around 6:15 pm), and enjoy seasonal music courtesy of local choirs. Be sure to bring along your camera to capture your children’s smiling faces as they whisper their Christmas wishes to Santa Claus. Stick around to purchase tasty treats from local vendors, as your children decorate their letter to Santa and visit the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum. There will also be horse and carriage rides available for purchase!

Held in conjunction with the Suffolk Farmers’ Market, the traditional outdoor holiday market features artisan-quality crafts, jewelry, soaps, fine art, candles, woodcrafts, birdhouses, crocheted items, jams and jellies, totes, holiday ornaments, wreaths, baked goods, seasonal produce, meats and more. The Artisan Gift Fair is scheduled for 9am until 3 pm on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at the open-air Suffolk Visitor Center Pavilion. Conveniently located at the corner of Constance Road and North Main Street, the Suffolk Visitor Center Pavilion will be festive with live music, petting zoo, face painting and a bounce house.
