Glass Blowing Workshop

Time: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Neil Duman will be teaching the course and students will have the opportunity to create their own piece of blown glass. You get to be creative and decide what you want to make! Neil is a wonderful teacher who works with each student separately on a one on one basis. Once registration is complete, the Education Manager will reach out to the workshop participants and schedule a one-hour time slot that you will have individual attention to creating the piece of art work. Create a beautiful Christmas gift for someone on your list!

Historic Suffolk Narrated Bus Tour

Historic Suffolk Narrated Bus Tour

Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

See Suffolk through the eyes of years gone by. Suffolk’s rich heritage dates back to the early 17th century, when Captain John Smith first encountered the Nansemond Indians on the Nansemond River. Even now, you can trace Suffolk’s legacy through our historic homes and neighborhoods, churches and Virginia Civil War Trails. Guided by a Suffolk historian, you meet the people and places that made Suffolk the city it is today. Highlights of this windshield tour include Cedar Hill Cemetery, Riddick’s Folly House Museum, Constant’s Wharf, College Court and Suffolk’s Historic Lakeside neighborhood. *Please note that this tour includes a stop and brief tour of the Philips-Dawson House (Suffolk Nansemond Historical Society Headquarters)

Cost: $8 adults; $6 seniors (60+), military, and children 9-12.

Suffolk Grand Illumination

Suffolk Grand Illumination

Time: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The 2018 Holiday Season officially begins in Suffolk on Friday, November 16, with the Suffolk Grand Illumination Ceremony at Market Park in Downtown Suffolk. The event rings in the holidays with the park opening at 6 p.m. Watch the 32′ tree light up when the switch is flipped at 6:15 p.m., illuminating Suffolk for the holiday season. Be there when Santa arrives in style (around 6:30 p.m.), and enjoy seasonal music courtesy of local choirs. Be sure to bring along your camera to capture your children’s smiling faces as they whisper their Christmas wishes to Santa Claus. Stick around to purchase tasty treats from local vendors, as your children decorate their letter to Santa and visit the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum. There will also be horse and carriage rides available for purchase!

All activities are open until 8 p.m. Parking will available at the Suffolk Visitor Center at 524 N. Main Street and free shuttle service will run from the Godwin Courts Building parking lot from 5:45 to 8:30 p.m.

Luke Willette grew up in Franklin County, Missouri, and settled in Hampton Roads after a stint in the Navy. Luke lives in Suffolk with his wife Amy and two children. He owns Willette Plumbing. Luke has been playing guitar on and off since he was 12 and has been working at songwriting for the past ten years.

Great Dismal Swamp Safari

Time: 9:30 am - 1:30 pm

The Great Dismal Swamp is anything but dismal. The narrated Swamp Safari, one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions, fills up quickly. This four-hour tour is led by a biologist specializing is the unique habitat of the Great Dismal. Learn about the history, lore, vegetation and wildlife with this adventure that includes a brief walk to Lake Drummond. Sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended. A small snack and beverage is provided. This tour is not recommended for very small children. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour. Cedar Hill Cemetery Stroll

An official Virginia Civil War Trail site, Cedar Hill Cemetery has long been an attraction for history buffs and even walking groups. The Suffolk Division of Tourism offers a guided stroll through the pleasant 32-acre cemetery, rich in history and natural beauty. The 90-minute daytime tour will offer unique insights into Suffolk’s heritage as tour goers traverse the cedar-lined terrain dotted with timeworn headstones. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour. Call the Suffolk Visitor Center at 757.514.4130 to reserve your spot. Special rates are available for groups of 12 or more.
